Homemade Croutons

Today’s post can be filed under “Waste Not” or possibly “This is So Simple I Don’t Know Why I Haven’t Always Done This”.

I made some bread recently that just didn’t turn out right, anyone who bakes bread will understand what I mean. It tasted ok but the consistency just wasn’t right. I didn’t want to toss it out but I also couldn’t really eat it. What started as a disaster (again, bread bakers, you know what I’m talking about!) turned into a really tasty snack and salad topper.

You need:
stale bread (store-bought works ok too)
oil of choice
spices of choice

Cut the bread into cubes.
Put the bread in a large bowl and pour in some oil (roughly 1 Tbsp per slice of bread), mix well.
Add the spices in (I like salt, garlic powder and pizza seasoning mix), and mix well.
Place the bread on a baking sheet.
For thicker, homemade bread you can stick under the broiler for 3-5 minutes.
For thin or store-bought bread bake at 375 for 5-10 minutes.

Let cool and store at room temperature. It’s important to let them croutons cool completely before storing, otherwise they will get stale, or worse yet, soggy and no one wants a soggy crouton.
